Monti Verdi in Mantua: a trip to remember

Nello Colombo reports on the third concert of the "Cori a Teatro" series at the Palazzo Ducale in Revere (Borgo Mantovano), held for the feast of St John Paul II together with the "Po...lifonia Choral Festival", the local council and the Pro Loco. Coro Monti Verdi, conducted by Tamara Della Vedova, shared the evening with Corale Humana Vox under Simone Morandi. After a guided tour of the palace came a tribute to Pope John Paul II with "Fratello sole, sorella luna" and a "Signore delle cime" sung by both choirs together and conducted jointly by their two directors, which brought the audience to its feet. The two choirs first met at Sabbioneta in 2024, and the exchange will continue next year in Valtellina.

Three choirs on stage, the mountains as protagonist

Folk choral singing returns to Morbegno, at the Sant’Antonio auditorium, with a spring event that brings the repertoire of yesterday and today to the town of the Bitto. Three ensembles share the stage: the In…Canto choir of Casalmaggiore, founded in 2020 and made up of male voices drawn to a cappella singing; Coro Monti Verdi of Tirano, established in November 1966 and one of the best-known and most esteemed groups in Valtellina, conducted by Tamara Della Vedova with a wide repertoire ranging from Italian and foreign folk tradition to classical and contemporary polyphony; and the youngest ensemble, Città di Morbegno, born in 2021 from the merger of the Coro Alpi Retiche of Civo and the Coro Alpino of Berbenno, conducted by maestro Gioele Peruzzi. A meeting of choral traditions celebrating the song of the mountains and the bond with the land.

The enchantment of “Monte Verdi” with Alpette and Desdacia

Applause in the church of the Sacro Cuore in Tirano for “Corincanto 2026”, a choral evening dedicated to the memory of founder William Marconi and organised by Coro Monti Verdi, led by Tamara Della Vedova. Alongside the hosts, two prestigious guest choirs performed: Alpette of Turin, conducted by Luca Carmelo Sambataro, and Desdacia Tellini of Sondrio, conducted by Diego Ceruti. A deeply moving moment was the return of Guglielmo Mazzucotelli, 91, the choir’s historic baritone, and the “green jumper” investiture rite for three new choristers (Carmine Riccò, Mauro Giacomo Tognela and Graziano Angelini). The day had been preceded by an improvisation by Sambataro on the monumental 1852 Serassi organ in the Collegiata di San Martino, a Petite Suite dedicated to the town of Tirano. The evening featured the “crossed repertoires challenge”, with Monti Verdi performing “Luna” conducted by Ceruti and “Ultimi fior” conducted by Sambataro, ending all together with Bepi De Marzi’s “Benia calastoria”.

Coro Monti Verdi wins over French audiences too

Report from the tour to Aumetz, in the French heartland near the Luxembourg border, where Coro Monti Verdi of Tirano represented Italy at the International Choral Singing Festival organised by the 'Mines en Chœurs' association. For three evenings the Tirano ensemble, conducted with energy and verve by Tamara Della Vedova, shared the stage with 'Les Voix', the Corsican 'Coro Corsu' and 'Pis Zvabek' from the Austrian-Slovenian border region, alternating folk, classical and contemporary repertoire tied to the mountains. Deeply moving moments arose among the audience — many of them Italian emigrants in France — during the dialect songs, and at the end of the concert the choirs joined together to perform 'Va, pensiero' from Nabucco. A visit to the Aumetz iron-mine museum and a boat trip on the Moselle in the three-borders area completed an experience that renews the choir's momentum ahead of celebrations for its sixtieth anniversary.

Don Ramirez's liturgy with Coro Monti Verdi

Within the architectural splendour of the Basilica of the Madonna di Tirano, Coro Monti Verdi led the solemn liturgy presided over by don Reniel Alì Ramírez Herrera, rector of the Roman church of Santa Bibiana and fellow of the Pontifical Gregorian University. A celebration of profound spiritual intensity — fruit of the friendship between the priest and Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi — in which the choir wove together hymns of faith and pieces from the folk repertoire. A page of sacred music that moved the faithful present at the sanctuary and renewed the dialogue between Valtellina's choral tradition and Church institutions.

Memorial Colombo: the grace of the three choirs

In the Renaissance setting of the former Annunciata convent in Abbiategrasso, Coro Monti Verdi of Tirano, conducted by Tamara Della Vedova, took part in the ninth edition of the 'Memorial Gigi Colombo' Choirs for Hospice festival, alongside Corotrecime Città di Abbiategrasso conducted by Stefano Piloni and Cantori delle Cime of Lugano led by Manuel Rigamonti. A crescendo of pieces ran from the spirituality of 'Deus ti salvet Maria' and the Canticle of Creatures of Brother Sun and Sister Moon to Bepi De Marzi's 'Signore delle cime', with Monti Verdi reaching also the moving 'Ahuna Ya Tswanang Le Jesu'. An emotional experience of consonance between voices that confirmed the choir's artistic maturity on the threshold of its sixtieth year.

Folk singing enters the classroom — Magic at the Pinchetti

A first-of-its-kind collaboration between the 'Pinchetti' music high school in Tirano and Coro Monti Verdi: students from the five music-track classes, guided by music technology teachers Andrea Pelati and Matteo Bertolini, welcomed the choristers into the school's recording studio for a session dedicated to the alpine folk repertoire. Under Tamara Della Vedova's direction the choir recorded pieces from its tradition, while the students took turns at the console handling capture, mixing and post-production. A generational bridge between folk song and cutting-edge technology, looking ahead to the choir's diamond anniversary in 2026, with the aim of gathering enough material for a future CD.
